A spate of dog poisonings in the town's historic district has sparked an investigation that could result in charges being filed.

"We're anticipating the case will be turned over to the county attorney's office later this week," said Police Chief Frank Bell.Five dogs have died over the last two weeks after eating poison-laced meat.

"We've talked to several people, but nobody's been charged yet," said Bell, who said the city for some time has had trouble with unleashed canines.

"It's been a problem particularly in the older parts of town where people don't have big yards . . . it's a pretty controversial issue here in Park City, but this isn't the way to solve it."

The poisonings are reminiscent of a number of dog-shootings that occurred last year in Summit County beyond the Park City limits. Those, however, were blamed largely on ranchers, who in recent years have said their livelihood is threatened by development and the influx of new residents.
