I am writing in response to Dale J. Harding's letter of Dec. 17. Personally, I have never watched "NYPD Blue," in part because of the bad press it has received (I have no desire to let any more "sex and violence" into my home than absolutely necessary), but mostly because I just don't like cop shows.
Which brings me to my point: People can, and do, choose what they want to watch. Unlike Harding, I believe that my husband and I control the TV, and not vice versa. Harding states that "just turn it off" is not a realistic solution. In my opinion, it is the only solution.Censorship is not and never will be the answer. If television is a "glorified baby sitter" in Harding's house, then that is his problem. If he is so concerned about society's eroding values, then he should start rebuilding those values at home.
If Harding does not want to watch "NYPD Blue," then don't. (That's one thing that we will have in common.) But please, please stop screaming your displeasure from the rooftops. You may not realize this, but letters like yours do little more than provide free publicity for the program.
