Three breeding pairs of exotic green pheasants have been donated to Hogle Zoo by students from the Aoyama College of Animal Science in Tokyo.

The birds were donated, zoo officials said, in appreciation for hosting the school's work program last summer.Fourteen students from the college were hosted for two weeks last July at the zoo, where they learned about the care of the zoo's mammal, bird and reptile collection.

The program was part of the college's required animal care courses, and the students also worked in area private farms for one week following their zoo experience.

Donation of the pheasants, which will be placed on public display following quarantine and climate acclimation at the zoo, is significant to the zoo because it establishes a new bloodline in the United States for breeding the birds.
