I was saddened to hear that another Utah Highway patrolman was killed in the performance of his duties. By trying to stop a dangerous situation - a trailer without taillights - he put himself in danger.

But the question I have not seen asked is why was this trailer traveling without taillights? If the driver of that vehicle had been responsible and made sure his trailer lights were working, there never would have been a stop on the freeway. It is even more disturbing to hear that the group in the van was a Boy Scout group on its way to a camping trip.

Once again, we hear in the news of irresponsible, ill-prepared Boy Scouts and their leaders getting into an accident. Perhaps it's time for state safety officials to sit down with Boy Scout leaders and discuss common sense. The fact that numerous Boy Scouting deaths in this state are the result of stupidity and irresponsibility does not make them any more excusable than the gang violence deaths born out of anger and frustration.
