A free public candlelight vigil is scheduled Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. on the grounds of Levitt's Chapel of Flowers, 836 36th St., to promote awareness of the menace of domestic violence.

Speaking on the dangers of domestic violence in northern Utah will be Ina Sheehan, social worker for the women's crisis center at Ogden's YCC (Your Community Connection); Mike Empey, chief of the Ogden Police Department; and Pam Harrison, a WSU graduate in social work who now holds a master's degree from the University of Utah.Following the speeches, members of the public will walk in a procession with lighted candles, place their candles in one group, join hands and sing "We Shall Overcome." Candles and holders will be supplied at the vigil, or participants may bring their own.

Originator of the idea for the vigil is Annette Tittensor, Ogden, a former WSU student. She approached the women's studies department at WSU after she was touched by media reports on violence in the household of sports figure O.J. Simpson. Simpson is now awaiting trial for the death of his former wife and her friend.

"October is domestic violence month," Tittensor said. She said the vigil will "bring wishes of hope to those who suffer under this siege of terror" and help people remember "those who have fallen as its victims."
