It has been quiet on the political front of two lesser populated counties in south-central Utah as candidates failed to use the extra time for campaigning that was provided by an early primary.

Several positions are up for grabs in Piute and Wayne counties, but a number of candidates are running unopposed. Both counties will have commission races.In Piute, Democrat Martin Jensen is opposing Republican Leland Millett for the Commission A post, and Paul Morgan, a Republican, is opposed by Democrat Cathy Whittaker for the Commission B position.

The commission election in Wayne County pits incumbent Republican Meeks Morrell against Forest T. Sims, an independent, for Commission B, and Republican DeVon K. Nelson against Democrat Stanley E. Alvey for Commission A.

Sheriff candidates Cordell Pearson in Piute and Don E. Torgerson in Wayne, both Republicans, won't have opposition. Pearson is an incumbent and Torgerson won in the primary over Sheriff Leeon Brinkerhoff.

Piute County

Assessor - Democrat Lenna Romine vs. Republican Joe Johnson. Unopposed are Republican Shane Millett for recorder/trea-surer; Democrat Valeen Brown for clerk/auditor; and Brent Gottfredson for justice court judge, a non-partisan contest. School board Precinct 1: Richard Sylvester vs. William Blackwell; Precinct 2: Ricky Dalton vs. Don Lay; Precinct 3: Quin Newby vs. Helen Jenkins.

Wayne County

Assessor - Democrat Carol L. Moosman vs. Republican Rudolph Pace. Unopposed are Republican Loma Blackburn for treasurer/re-corder; Republican Sandra Rees for clerk/auditor; and Roy Brown, justice court judge. School Board Precinct 4: Gary Hallows vs. Loen Morrell; Precinct 5: LaMiya Morrell, unopposed.
