There are two contested races and two races where incumbents face no opposition in the Salt Lake City District.

Political newcomers Davis Sawatzki and Karen Derrick are running for the District 3 seat vacated by former school board president Ann Clawson who moved out of state. In District 6, incumbent Diane C. Barlow is being challenged by political newcomer James R. Schreiber.In District 7, incumbent D. Kent Michie faces no opposition. The same is true for incumbent school board President Mary Jo Rasmussen in District 4.

Key issues are the substantial increases in the number of low-income and at-risk students. There also are many more minority students, many of whom speak little or no English.
