Damon Runyon was already pretty confident of his ability when he went looking for his first newpaper job.
He dropped in without an appointment and asked to see the editor. The secretary told him that was out of the question. Instead of leaving, Runyon sat down, took out a deck of cards and began to play solitaire. After a while, the secretary went into the editor's office and said:
"There's a fellow outside who wants to see you about a job."
"Tell him to leave his card," said the editor without looking up.
The secretary went back to Runyon.

"He says to leave your card. Have you got one?"
Runyon picked and ace from the deck.
"Give him this," he said.
The card opened the door and he got the job.
