Detroit quarterback Scott Mitchell could be done for the season after breaking a bone in his right hand in Sunday's loss to Green Bay.
The left-hander was injured when he was hit hard by Reggie White in the second quarter of the Lions' 38-30 loss. He stayed in the game, but threw an interception on the next play and was knocked down again by Sean Jones."He's got a cast on his right hand. Broken bones like that take some time to heal," Detroit coach Wayne Fontes said. "We'll have to wait and see."
Mitchell's navicular bone was fractured at the base of his right thumb, team physician David Collon told the Detroit Free Press.
Collon said the bone occasionally does not heal properly and that Mitchell would be out between six and nine weeks. He said complete immobilization is needed for the bone to heal correctly.
"I think the chances are less than 50-50 right now that he could possibly return sooner than six weeks," Collon said.
Mitchell joined Detroit this season, signing a three-year, $11.1 million contract as a free agent.
