Four first place finishes and good depth in most of the events earned a second-place finish for BYU's women's swim team at the Western Intercollegiate Invitational Friday and Saturday.
The meet, hosted by the University of the Pacific at the Cottonwood Heights Aquatics Center, was won by Pacific with 221 points.BYU, which ended the first day with a one-point lead over Nevada, wound up with 200 points. Other scores were Fresno State 159, Nevada 155, Utah 81, Cal Poly SLO 25, San Francisco 4, Cal-Davis 3 and San Jose State 3.
All of the Cougars' top producers were from the state of Utah. Winners were Cherrill Haws, Sandy, in both the 500 free (5:00.53) and 1650 free (17:09.77); Celeste Belliston, Orem, in the 200 back (2:08.17); and Amie Nielsen in the 200 fly (2:09.17).
Belliston was also fourth in the 500 free (5:06.73) and Nielsen was second in the 100 fly (59.37).
Nicole Collard, West Valley, placed second in the 100 free (52.77) and 200 free (1:53.42) and third in the 100 back (1:01.05).
Anji Porter, Cedar City took second in the 200 back (2:26.85) and third in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.00).
The Cougars' 800-free relay squad placed second in 7:48.25.
BYU's next meet is Nov. 11 at home against UNLV.
