I am quite dismayed that our young people will not be allowed to debate the pros and cons of the 2002 Winter Games. The reasons for this action - the Bid Committee fears negative press could hurt Salt Lake's chances, and the education administrators fear the kids will not be able to find enough information against hosting the Games - smells of just another political cover-up.

If our bid is so weak that a debate by our youth would harm our chances, maybe we should pack up our toys and stay home. I believe there is more concern about hosting the 2002 Winter Olympics than is allowed to surface through the media. Further, underestimating our youth by stating that it would be too tough to find negative information is a real slap in the face. Most kids love a challenge. Not allowing the youth this debate takes them out of the process that is leading to probably the biggest event in the history of Utah's second century.
