Storm totals (in inches) were impressive: Salt Lake Airport, 1.02; Springville, 2.15; east Layton, 3.13; Peoa, 3.35; and Orem, 2.11. On the 5th, severe thunderstorms struck areas of the Salt Lake Valley. Hail up to 11/4-inch in diameter hit the airport area, causing considerable damage to several "membrane" roofs. Later in the morning a swath of hail with stones up to an inch in diameter hit the Sandy, Willow Creek, Holladay and Millcreek areas. The hail severely damaged the roof and plugged storm drains at the Cottonwood Mall, causing water to cascade into the shopping center. Damage was estimated at $1.3 million.

OCT. 14-18: Another major stormy period occurred, with the 15th and 16th being the most active days. The snow level dropped to about 5,000 feet over most of the state. Heavy, wet snow produced some tree damage in Sandy and south into the Fillmore, Meadow and Cedar City areas.

Some snowfall amounts (in inches): Kanosh, 17; Alta, 25; top of the tram at Snowbird, 32; Brian Head, Iron County, 23; Holden, Millard County, 12; Tooele, 10; Cove Fort, Millard County, 8; Woodland, Summit County, 6; and Cedar City, 7.
