Utah Weather Highlights:
OCT. 1-6: A "kooky" intense low-pressure area that formed over northwest Montana and southern Canada moved southwestward to an area off the California coast on Tuesday, Oct. 4. The low-pressure system then moved eastward over Nevada and Utah by Wednesday, the 5th, when it rained hard. Storm totals (in inches) were impressive: Salt Lake Airport, 1.02; Springville, 2.15; east Layton, 3.13; Peoa, 3.35; and Orem, 2.11. Snow fell in the mountains, with eight inches in the Albion Basin above Alta, five inches at Brighton and six at Alta.
On the 5th, severe thunderstorms struck areas of the Salt Lake Valley. Hail up to 11/4-inch in diameter hit the airport area, causing considerable damage to several "membrane" roofs. Later in the morning a swath of hail with stones up to an inch in diameter hit the Sandy, Willow Creek, Holladay and Millcreek areas. The hail severely damaged the roof and plugged storm drains at the Cottonwood Mall, causing water to cascade into the shopping center. Damage was estimated at $1.3 million.
OCT. 14-18: Another major stormy period occurred, with the 15th and 16th being the most active days. The snow level dropped to about 5,000 feet over most of the state. Heavy, wet snow produced some tree damage in Sandy and south into the Fillmore, Meadow and Cedar City areas.
Some snowfall amounts (in inches): Kanosh, 17; Alta, 25; top of the tram at Snowbird, 32; Brian Head, Iron County, 23; Holden, Millard County, 12; Tooele, 10; Cove Fort, Millard County, 8; Woodland, Summit County, 6; and Cedar City, 7. Water amounts were substantial: Kaysville, 2.12 inches; Sandy, 2.47; Kanosh, Millard County, 2.16; Tooele, 3.15; Salt Lake Airport, 1.22; and Nephi, 2.26.
Some October (monthly) precipitation totals: Alta, 5.93 inches (170 percent of normal); Blanding, 1.86 (137 percent of normal); Brigham City, 2.99 (161 percent); Bryce Canyon, 1.86 (155 percent); Holladay, 3.83 (170 percent); Kanab, 1.19 (121 percent); Salt Lake Airport, 2.44 (155 percent); Heber City, 3.27 (218 percent); Richmond, 3.22 (175 percent); and Tooele, 3.93 (217 percent).
