Athletic director Homer Rice wants to have a new football coach at Georgia Tech as close to Dec. 1 as possible to prevent a disruption in recruiting.
Rice named defensive coordinator George O'Leary interim coach for the final three games of the season Monday night after Bill Lewis resigned under pressure."It's a rare privilege to be the coach at Georgia Tech," Lewis said. "I'm disappointed that I was unable to produce the winning program."
Lewis spoke for 15 minutes at a news conference announcing his departure.
At the end, his voice quivered and his eyes moistened as he said, "I love Georgia Tech and I love Atlanta and I'm very appreciative of having had the opportunity" to coach the Yellow Jackets.
The Jackets (1-7 overall, 0-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) are mired in a six-game losing streak, the longest since 1987.
