Police are investigating circumstances surrounding the death of a baby found not breathing Friday at a Midvale daycare center.
Jordan Doherty, 8 months old, died on Saturday. The Department of Human Services' Office of Licensing placed the day-care center, 80 S. Oak St., on a 90-day conditional license pending the findings of a police investigation. The procedure is standard following any such incident."This is not a reflection of guilt, just a procedure," said Mike Dale, department spokesman.
Emergency medical crews were called to the day care about 9:30 a.m. Friday and found Doherty not breathing. She was resuscitated and transported to Primary Children's Medical Center, where she died a day later, Midvale police Capt. Dan Pearson said.
The state medical examiner's office performed an autopsy Sunday with results pending, Pearson said. Specifically, investigators are examining if the baby was shaken prior to the complications. As of Monday, Pearson said police were unwilling to classify the death a homicide pending interviews with those involved and the results of the medical examinations.
"It certainly is very suspicious," Pearson said.
The center opened in September and is licensed for up to five children, Dale said. On Friday, four children were present, including the owner's son.
