Provo city posted signs Monday prohibiting left turns onto University Avenue from Center Street and 200 North as part of its plan to curb automobile pollution downtown.
The permanent restriction is designed to keep traffic off University Avenue and specifically away from the carbon monoxide monitor at 250 N. University. The city has placed barricades on the curb under the monitor to prevent cars from parking near it.City officials believe reducing traffic on the busy thoroughfare could prevent viola-tions of federal air quality standards.
The small no-turn placards posted on the traffic signal arms are difficult to see. Drivers on Center Tuesday morning either didn't see the signs or ignored them.
Provo police Capt. Craig Geslison said traffic officers don't think the signs are visible enough and have contacted city engineers about making them easier to see.
Police will allow a two-week grace period before enforcing the new traffic law, he said. Violators might be pulled over, but Geslison anticipates issuing few citations in the next few weeks.
