A construction worker welding in a Kennecott converter sustained second-degree burns early Tuesday following a minor explosion.

Rick Beardall, 34, was transported to Pioneer Valley Hospital, where he was treated for burns and a sprained wrist. Beardall expected to return to work Tuesday night, Kennecott spokesman Drew Hunter said. The "flash" occurred about 5 a.m. when Beardall lit his torch and it inadvertently ignited gas that had built up in the enclosed area, Hunter said.

"I hesitate to call it an explosion," he said.
