If Jerry Spencer (Forum, Oct. 28) has his way, he may find himself in jail. He suggests that, "If a child gets into trouble prior to the age of 18, the parents (both of them) should serve up to one half the sentence, depending on the child's age."

The problem is, not all troubled kids have uncaring, uninvolved parents. What if Mr. Spencer did his best to raise great kids, which he is obviously trying to do, but one of them turned out to be a rebel and a law-breaker? It happens all the time. Would Dad deserve the same punishment as the kid? I don't think so.Norm Springer
