West High employee Karen G. Derrick, who has lobbied hard to crush plans for an I-15 North Temple interchange that would swirl traffic around the high school, has won the District 3 seat on the Salt Lake City School Board.
It is the seat vacated by former board president Ann Clawson, who moved out of state. Derrick, who has not run for office before, defeated another political newcomer, David Sawatzki. He had emphasized district finances as a major campaign issue. For her part, Derrick pushed for safe schools.Derrick won with 5,030 votes against Sawatzki's 1,203.
In District 6, incumbent board member Diane Barlow kept her seat against challenger James Schreiber. Schreiber took a strongly pro-business approach in his campaign, while Barlow emphasized her longtime volunteer and community work.
Barlow won with 4,831 votes against Schreiber's 3,454.
In District 7, incumbent D. Kent Michie faced no opposition and received 5,313 votes. Mary Jo Rasmussen, the current board president, also faced no opposition in District 4 and received 4,208 votes.
