6 seats switch from Democrats to GOP

- Democrat Arlo James was first elected to the House in 1976 and was later re-elected in 1982 and every two years for the past 12 years. On Tuesday, James was defeated by Republican Sue Lockman in the District 38 race in the Kearns area. He was the center of controversy when statements made in reference to illegal immigrants were interpreted as racist.

- Democrat Allan Rushton was elected to the House in 1986, one of several "young turks" elected during a Democratic resurgence that year. Rushton was defeated by Republican Ron Bigelow in the race for House District 32 in West Valley City.

- Democrat Sara Eubank, elected to the House two years ago, was a rising star among House Democrats during her first year in office, but courtroom allegations by a former employee who accused Eubank of firing her shortly after she had been raped generated national headlines and short-circuited Eubank's political career. Even though the woman who filed suit (it was dismissed) later campaigned on Eubank's behalf, Eubank was defeated by Republican Darlene Gubler in the race for House District 41 in Holladay.

- Democrat Darrell Jorgensen, elected to the House in 1990, was defeated by Republican Bryan D. Holladay in the race for the District 47 seat in the Midvale area.

- Schoolteacher and Democratic incumbent Paul Shepherd, elected to the House in 1992, was defeated by Republican challenger David Bresnahan in the race for House District 42 in the West Jordan area.
