Residents of Union rejected a bid to become Utah's newest city.
According to final but unofficial results, 2,156 residents voted against incorporation while 1,922 residents voted for it.The drive to make Union a city was spurred by expansion of the Family Center shopping complex on Fort Union Boulevard. Residents accused the Salt Lake County Commission earlier this year of paying more attention to Hermes Associates Inc., developers of the shopping complex, than to their opposition regarding the shopping center expansion.
Supporters of incorporation also hoped to head off annexation by the neighboring cities of Sandy and Midvale.
Instead, the defeated measure joins a growing list of unsuccessful incorporation movements. Union's effort is the 11th unsuccessful incorporation drive in the county since 1978.
