The Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro smolders in the Indian Ocean Thursday about 160 miles off Somalia after a raging fire forced the nearly 1,000 people aboard to take to lifeboats and abandon the ship. Two passengers were reported dead and eight injured in Wednesday's fire, the latest in a series in misfortunes that have befallen the cruise ship. The ship was listing about 20 degrees but was in no immediate danger of sinking. After a night aboard the oil tanker that picked them up, passengers began transferring aboard an armada of commercial vessels and two U.S. Navy ships for passage to nearby ports. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown.
