Japan has emphasized the peaceful pursuits of athletic competition in honoring the 12th Asian Games recently held in Hiroshima by issuing two new stamps.

The Asian Games are comprehensive sports contests held in Asia every four years. Forty-three countries that are members of the Olympic Council of Asia participated in the Hiroshima games. Along with sports competitions there also were performances in music and art.The 80-yen se-tenent (attached) stamp features two events - a track and field steeplechase and synchronized swimming. The 50-yen single stamp illustrates an Asian event called "sepak," which is similar to volleyball, except that kicking the ball over the net is permissible.

Also issued by Japan are three new stamps commemorating the opening of the Kansai International Airport in Osaka. Two stamps show a bird's-eye view of the airport, while the third depicts a large passenger plane flying over the new facility.

At the same time a single stamp was released to honor the Plenipotentiary Conference of the International Union in Kyoto. The 80-yen stamp features a parabolic antenna and a communications satellite.

All six new Japanese stamps are available (mint) for $19.95 from the International Collectors Society, P.O. Box 854, Van Nuys, CA 91408.
