PIGS AND MONKEYS

River pigs and pond monkeys once were a common sight in the lakes and steams near sawmills and lumberyards. But anyone looking for these aquatic animals probably would not have recognized them.

In the olden days, the term "river pig" referred to a lumber-jack who transported logs to the mills during river drives, while a pond monkey was a nickame for the person handling and sorting logs in a mill pond.
