WASHINGTON COUNTY TARGETS TAX RATES

SHARE WASHINGTON COUNTY TARGETS TAX RATES

Washington County commissioners are faced with a possible tax hike next year, thanks to a law that ties tax revenue to fluctuations in property values.

Washington County has the lowest tax rate in Utah, according to the Utah State Tax Commission, but not because of anything the commissioners have done. State statutes require that tax rates automatically go down as property values escalate. And since Washington County is the fastest growing county in the state, property values have skyrocketed - and the tax rate has plummeted accordingly.

The result is a revenue shortfall that has commissioners and others reluctantly considering upping the tax assessment. A public hearing has yet to be set.
