About 12,000 Trekkies paid $100 each to get beamed up - by telephone - for a chat with William Shatner and Patrick Stewart.

For their money, Sunday's callers got a souvenir telephone card and an access code allowing them to join one of three hourlong conference calls with the Starship Enterprise captains. The event kicked off a series of Telephone Entertainment Cards, costing $10 or $20, which enable fans to either make long-distance calls at 50 cents a minute or hear taped interviews with "Star Trek" stars for $1 a minute.

Shatner acknowledged that $100 was a lot of money for the call but said the cards, embossed with "Star Trek" images, are likely to increase in value. Only 15,000 of the cards are being issued.
