Christmas morning will be bleak for hundreds of low-income Utah children if they are not "adopted" by generous volunteers.

Thousands of families have qualified for the Sub for Santa program, co-sponsored by the Deseret News and the Salt Lake Tribune. And while hundreds of those families have been adopted, many more are still hoping.Applicants were screened by the Salt Lake Christmas Council to avoid duplication of services. Families were assigned to the programs based on need. The most destitute qualified for Sub for Santa.

Organizations, families and individuals are being asked to adopt a family and agree to provide a toy or two and a couple of clothing items for the children. It is not necessary to provide a lavish Christmas.
