Police found on Sunday the body of a 65-year-old woman who had frozen to death during the night.
Officers responded to a vacant house at 264 S. 500 East about 8:30 a.m. and found the woman lying in one of the home's bedrooms. She reportedly had been drinking with a group of people that evening.Police had not yet notified next of kin and did not release the woman's name Monday morning.
Dick Winters of the Community Resource Center said deaths among the homeless are common this time of year. Winters said even though shelters are often crowded, no one is ever turned away.
Some homeless people prefer to sleep outside, he said. As many as 300 to 500 homeless people camp out every night despite freezing winter temperatures.
