Councilman Stuart Reid, who represents Salt Lake City's District 1, will serve as council chairman in 1995.
Council members cast ballots to elect a new leader last week. Reid was elected to the one-year position on a 4-2 vote.Reid is in his first term on the council. He has served since last January. His district covers the northwest section of the city, which includes the Rose Park, Fairpark and Northwest neighborhoods.
The council chairman signs documents on behalf of the council, represents the council's position to the media and the administration and oversees management of the council office.
Reid is a community relations manager for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He succeeds Alan Hardman, the council representative for District 4.
Council member Sam Souvall, who represents District 2, will serve as vice chairman. Souvall's district includes the Capitol Hill and Avenues neighborhoods. Souvall is a real estate investor.
