A Komi herdsman stands in a sparkling winter landscape with his reindeer at Verne-Kolvinsk in the Komi region of northern Russia earlier this week. His herd lives near the site of huge oil spills earlier this year at Usinsk. Greenpeace is in the process of conducting a research visit to the area to check the animals for signs of oil contamination, including birth defects and blindness.
