Morgan Wootten never planned on becoming the winningest high school basketball coach in history. The victories just kept adding up for him.

Now the coach of the DeMatha team in Hyattsville, Md., is closing in on that distinction. He has a current career record of 1,047-152, one game behind Ralph Tasker of Hobbs, N.M., and Bill Krueger, of Clear Lake (Houston), who each have 1,048 wins. Also vying for the lead is Robert Hughes, of Fort Worth Dunbar, with 1,046 wins."I never thought of anything that would be this long or this big." Wootten said. "We've had outstanding kids and outstanding coaches; it's a team milestone." Dematha has a 9-1 record this season.
