Lucien Bouchard, the charismatic Quebec separatist who leads the opposition in Canada's House of Commons, lost his leg to a flesh-eating disease, but doctors said Friday his life was not in danger.

Bouchard, 55, vowed to continue his political career.Dr. Patrick D'Amico said Bouchard underwent three operations since being admitted to the hospital Tuesday.

Bouchard was struck by a rare disease known as necrotizing myositis. It is similar to necrotizing fasciitis, the "flesh-eating disease," but attacks muscle rather than connective tissue.
