Retired Maj. Gen. John L. Matthews has been named as a member of the congressionally mandated Commission on Roles and Missions of the Armed Forces.

The commission is charged with providing an independent review of the roles and missions for the armed forces to Congress, the secretary of Defense and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.Matthews is the former adjutant general of the Utah National Guard and a former president of the National Guard Association of the United States. He is a command pilot with more than 7,300 hours flying time.

Matthews joins commission Chairman John P. White and nine other commissioners participating in a yearlong review that is already in progress. The commission's objective is to produce a report on improving the effectiveness and efficiency of the armed forces. Their report is expected in May.
