Most Americans do not know the difference between a medical degree and a doctorate degree, according to a new Harris poll.

While 96 percent of those polled knew a pediatrician is a medical doctor, 55 percent believed individuals who had earned a PhD attended medical school. The poll also showed a large segment of the population incorrectly believes psychologists and chiropractors are medical doctors with medical degrees. Sixty-two percent of Americans incorrectly believe psychologists possess medical degrees, and 67 percent of Americans think podiatists must earn medical degrees to be licensed.

The poll, conducted by telephone over a two-day period in November, surveyed 12,500 Americans and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percent.
