A carbon dioxide leak at a General Mills factory killed one worker and sent eight others to hospitals, authorities said Sunday.
Firefighters ventilated the building and shut the operation down, Fire Chief Rick Brisbin said. They found that the leak came from a 45-ton external carbon dioxide tank.Crews found the dead man on the fifth floor, where carbon dioxide had apparently asphyxiated him. Eight other employees were taken to hospitals, treated and released.
Carbon dioxide is used at the plant as part of a process to make Bisquick.
The Environmental Protection Agency and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating.
