Gene Whitmore wasn't able to win a seat on the Salt Lake County Commission, but beginning in January he'll be helping it get its work done just the same.

Commissioner Brent Overson has hired Whitmore as the county's intergovernmental relations specialist. Whitmore begins his new job Dec. 19.Whitmore will coordinate some of the commission's interaction with other elected officials, community councils and the Utah Legislature.

In November, Whitmore narrowly lost a bid to unseat Randy Horiuchi on the commission.

"I will have no problem working with Randy," Whitmore said. Randy is not my enemy. I view him as a friend, even now - or especially now."

As it is, Whitmore acknowledges he'll get to do governmental work but won't "suffer the political fallout nearly as much."

Whitmore will fill a position that was vacated four months ago when Jill Remington left to take a job with an advertising agency.
