Steer wrestler Rod Lyman closed in on traveling partner Brad Gleason with a 3.9-second performance in the seventh round of the National Finals Rodeo on Thursday night.

Lyman of Lolo, Mont., pulled within $12,391 of Gleason of Ennis, Mont., who has won $34,842 at the Thomas & Mack Center.Scott Mendes of Reno is second in bull riding after finishing in a tie for second with 81, but he's the rider to beat because he's also second in the average. Raymond Wessel of Cedar Point, Kan., won the seventh round with an 85.

Six-time team roping champions Jake Barnes of Cave Creek, Ariz., and Clay O'Brien Cooper of Higley, Ariz., continued their impressive NFR with a 4.7 winning time. They lead the average.

Deb Greenough of Red Lodge, Mont., and Ken Lensegrav of Piedmont, S.D., had 80s in bareback. Greenough still trails Marvin Garrett of Belle Fourche, S.D., by $26,672.

Dan Mortensen of Manhattan, Mont., held his saddle bronc lead by tying Billy Etbauer of Edmond, Okla., and Brad Gjermundson of Marshall, N.D., with 81.
