Joel Hinckley Bowen, 89, passed away February 14, 1994 at his home in Salt Lake City, after a long and fulfilling life.

He was born August 7, 1904 in Rexburg, Idaho, to Charles Franklin and Minnie Mary Hinckley Bowen. He married Elizabeth Newton Thomas in 1929. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. Beth died in 1943. He married Aliene Lauber in 1951 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He attended the U of U for two years before serving an LDS mission in Belgium from 1925 to 1928. Following his mission he graduated from NYU and then received his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1943.He was stationed in North Africa while serving his country in World War II, and was an Army Reserve officer for 29 years, reaching the rank of major. He worked for the Veterans Administration, and then as a purchasing agent for Christensen Diamond Products for 18 years. He prepared tax returns for clients for the last 21 years.

He served in many LDS Church callings including Temple Square host, temple worker, High Priest group leader, Sunday School superintendent and stake missionary.

He enjoyed helping others. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He loved to garden and shared his harvests with many widows and neighbors. He was a volunteer English tutor at the Guadalupe Center for 11 years and was a member of the Sons of the Utah Pioneers.

Survived by his wife, Aliene, Salt Lake; son, J. Thomas (Sally A.) Bowen, Salt Lake; five daughters: Laura (Robert A.) Glad, Craig, Colo.; Elizabeth Howell, Mesa, Ariz.; Adrienne Pease, Reno Nevada; Lou Ann Bowen, Provincetown, Mass.; Carolee Hosfeld, Salt Lake; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brothers: Max, Costa Mesa, Calif.; Gordon, Boise, Idaho; and sister, Jeanne Olsen, Salt Lake.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 18th, 12 noon, at the 33rd Ward, 453 South 1100 East. Friends may call at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Thursday evening, 6-8 p.m. and Friday, one hour prior to the services. Interment, Salt Lake City Cemetery.
