Dr. Sherman W. Wing, 80, of Provo, died February 14, 1994.
He was born February 6, 1914 in American Fork, Utah to Norman Arthur and Mariam Boley Wing. He married Elayne Hinckley on June 20, 1940, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Dr. Wing attended public schools in American Fork and received his bachelor's and master's degrees in English from Brigham Young University. He later earned his doctorate degree in educational administration from the University of Utah.
Dr. Wing's career as an educator spanned 44 years as a teacher, counselor, and administrator in Utah County public schools. He served as superintendent of Provo City Schools for 16 years and retired in 1980. He was an officer in the Utah Education Association, Utah Society of School Superintendents, and many national societies. He was also a visiting professor at BYU.
He was active in civic matters and was a member of the Provo Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, and Public Library Board. Dr. Wing received a Special Recognition Award from the BYU Emeritus Club in 1992. He was appreciated as an administrator for his diplomatic skills, foresight, and kind, gentle manner.
Dr. Wing was an active member of the LDS Church, serving in positions on both ward and stake levels. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Some of his family's fondest memories are of vacations, golf games, and other outdoor activities shared with him.
Dr. Wing is survived by his brother, Niles M. Wing, American Fork; four children, Dr. S. Douglas Wing, Provo; Dr. Robert W. Wing, Bountiful; Rebecca Wing Davis, Salt Lake City; Michele Wing Whatcoff, Springville; and 13 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elayne Hinckley Wing, brothers, Norman B. and John H. Wing, and a sister, Mariam Wing Hill.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 18, 1994, at the Oak Hills 1st and 7th Ward Chapel, 1038 No. 1200 East, Provo, at 10 a.m. Friends may call at the Berg Mortuary of Provo, 185 East Center Street, on Thursday, February 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. or at the chapel on Friday morning from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will be at the Provo City Cemetery.
