PROVO - Reconstruction of south University Avenue between 900 South and Interstate 15 is scheduled to begin in mid-March, according to Bob Westover, project engineer for the Utah Department of Transportation. The reconstruction will include removing the old road surface, replacing water, sewer and utility lines, and resurfacing the road with 10 inches of concrete.
Before the road work begins, however, some minor construction will be under way in the next few days. Construction crews will be replacing a storm drain on the east side of University Avenue. And although that may cause some minor traffic interference, it will help the construction go faster, Westover said.During the construction, half of the road will be closed while the other half of the road will carry one lane of traffic in each direction. When construction is completed on one half of the road, traffic will be diverted to that side and work will proceed on the other half of the road.
The construction will have an impact on businesses in East Bay, including Novell and other large employers. Employees of those companies or others who drive that area are encouraged to car pool, use alternate routes or work in staggered shifts during construction to ease congestion resulting from the construction work.
The half-mile project is being built at a cost of $1.5 million. UDOT's contractor on the job is Ralph L. Wadsworth of Salt Lake City. The construction is expected to last most of the summer.
