An apparent house repair scam cost a 90-year-old woman $3,150 recently. Police fear the scam is becoming increasingly prevalent in rural Utah.

The woman wrote a check to two men who spent a few hours at her residence supposedly repairing the house and spraying for termites. They cashed the check at a bank in Fillmore where the woman had an account and then they disappeared. The Millard County sheriff's office reported the men told the woman her chimney needed repair, the roof was "dented in" and the house had termites. They said they could take care of all of those problems.

A bill for $3,950 was presented to the woman but was reduced by $800 when she told the men she couldn't pay that much.

Officials in several states reported similar incidents in their areas.
