The slaying of suspected gang leader Angel Martinez may not have been due to gang rivalry, police said.
Salt Lake Police Detective Mickey Pahl said the 17-year-old may have been a target from a fight earlier in the day unrelated to a gang feud.On the night of Feb. 11, Martinez and his grandfather, Thomas Jacobs, 63, were returning home when another vehicle pulled into the driveway behind them. Several people got out of their car and fired at least five rounds, hitting Martinez and Jacobs in the back.
Jacobs was readmitted to LDS Hospital last Friday and remains in fair condition.
Family members believed the shooting was the result of a long feud between gangs.
For a week, police had no suspects in the Martinez attack, but leads are starting to develop, Pahl said. It is still possible the suspects are gang members, but the killing was not the result of a gang-related feud, Pahl said.
