The Brigham Young University student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers has donated $10,000 to the BYU Civil Engineering Scholarship Society.

The scholarship funds originated 12 years ago when the student group earned approximately $4,000 by furnishing drivers for an American Society for Engineering Education Conference. Since then, the interest earned from the original amount has been supplemented by various sources that include student membership dues, the sales of bridge kits for the annual high school bridge building competition and Fundamentals of Engineering publications. The BYU student chapter officers have been seeking a way to use the money to aid students in the Civil Engineering Department. Contributing the money to the Scholarship Society Endowment Fund was the ideal option, according to faculty adviser Don Budge.

The donation will be matched with a $5,000 donation from the BYU College of Engineering and Technology under a program established by Dean L. Douglas Smoot and will serve to provide scholarships for civil engineering students.
