Patti LuPone, who portrayed Norma Desmond in the London production of "Sunset Boulevard," has turned down an offer to replace Glenn Close in the Los Angeles production once Close takes the play to New York.
The job was offered to LuPone after news broke that she would not play the Norma Desmond role on Broadway, according to spokesmen for LuPone and "Sunset Boulevard" composer Andrew Lloyd Webber."Patti created the role of Norma Desmond; she created it before Glenn Close did," said her publicist, Robert Garlock. "So there would be no reason for her to go replace Glenn Close in a role that Patti already created."
Lloyd Webber spokesman Peter Brown confirmed the offer had been made and turned down.
"Patti is the biggest musical star Broadway has," Garlock said. "She's not at a point in her career where she needs to replace someone."
