James E. Faulconer, chair of the department of philosophy at Brigham Young University, has been named the new associate dean of general and honors education.

Faulconer replaces Stephen Ricks, who will be taking an academic leave. Faulconer's new assignment will become effective July 1.A member of the BYU faculty since 1975, Faulconer completed undergraduate work in English at BYU and earned both masters and doctoral degrees in philosophy from Pennsylvania State University.

Faulconer was Honors Professor of the Year in 1988, the same year he received an Alcuin Fellowship in recognition of his dedicated teaching and research. He was also selected to give the 1991 P.A. Christensen Lecture in Humanities, the highest faculty honor in the BYU College of Humanities.

His teaching and research specializations are in the areas of European philosophy and the history of philosophy.
