Mark Portugal, who joined the Giants for $11 million over three years, pitched 22/3 innings against the Chicago Cubs on Monday before his first outing for the Giants was cut short by a thunderstorm at Mesa, Ariz. The Giants lost, 6-5.
He walked four, two on four straight pitches, gave up three runs on one hit and took the loss.Still, he has a month to get ready for the winds of Candlestick Park.
"I'm still a little nervous," said the 30-year-old righthander, 18-4 for Houston last season. "When the game starts, your adrenalin starts pumping and you try to do too much. When the end of spring comes, I should be in the groove. Normally I don't walk a lot of guys, but I can accept that for my first outing."

At Port St. Lucie, Fla., Chan Ho Park, the South Korean rookie, pitched three scoreless innings for Los Angeles, allowing only a single to Bobby Bonilla.
"To be totally honest, I was rather nervous," Park said. "But the first batter (Fernando Vina) was a pretty small guy. That kind of helped me a little bit. I was trying very hard not to give up a run.
"Obviously, I am confident. Seeing other pitchers in the major leagues, as time goes on, my confidence is building up. I'm pretty confident I can pitch in the major leagues."
