Love the convenience of that jar of spaghetti sauce, but hate the cost? Hunt's Ready Tomato Sauces come in a tin can at a very reasonable cost. The "Chunky Mexican," "Original Italian,' "Original Chunky Tomato" and "Chunky Special" retail for 79 cents for a 15-ounce can.
Don Russell (married, five children at home, ages 14-4): "This is a convenient item to have in the kitchen. Hunt's Italian tomato sauce can be used to make hundreds of dishes. We made a pleasant tasting spaghetti sauce with it. In addition to usual tomato sauce ingredients, Hunt's adds sugar, dehydrated onions, garlic and other spices. Although it's easy to make your own sauces similar to this one, I think most people would be very comfortable serving or eating this sauce."Edyth Jensen (married, three children and two grandchildren at home): "We tried the chunky special and it is a delicious sauce. I simply poured it over some browned burger patties and left it to simmer till we were ready to eat. It is very good. We will use it again. The tomato chunks aren't too big. It isn't too spicy and just the right thickness."
Nihla Lake (married, two children at home): "If you thought there was a cola war going on, it is nothing compared to the pasta sauce skirmish - i.e. Ragu, Prego and the dozens of other flavors and brands lining the grocers' shelves. We tried the Original Italian Style and found a very tasty blend of tomato, garlic, onion and oil. It was not too tomatoey sweet or garlicy spicy - a real good sauce. We plan to use it again. (P.S. - There were some very important instructions on the container: Open can before heating.)"
Linda C. Tingey (single mother, four teenage boys at home): "The chunky special is loaded with everything. The sauce is such a nice consistency, very smooth with nice chunks of tomatoes, celery, onions and bell pappers. I greatly dislike plain tomato sauce - most of them are quite bitter. But this is delicious, it'd be terrific served over rice. This ought to be a real seller, you sure can't beat the price. I'll buy this again."
Rich Firmage (married, three children, oldest 8 years old): "On the back of the can it says this is good to `dip with chips.' So we tried it like salsa. The back also said it was `zesty,' but I thought it was rather bland - just tomato sauce with chunks in it. I like my salsa a bit spicy, but my kids like very unspicy. They liked this stuff. If I were to use it again I would mix it with some medium salsa to stretch it out a bit."
Bill Allred (single): "Tomato sauce is tomato sauce is tomato sauce is tomato sauce is tomato sauce is etc. This product was fine. Used it for spaghetti and it tasted fine. At 79 cents a can, the price is right. I would use this again."
Conclusion: This sauce came out of a can? It's yummy, it's fast and it's inexpensive! The only thing better is if you have time for homemade.
