A teenager remained in serious condition Tuesday after he was shot five times while crossing the street with his father Monday near the Rio Grande Hotel.

Hector Escobar Jr., 17, was shot in the chest, left thigh, lower left back, right thigh and at least once in his right arm, Salt Lake police Sgt. Phil Kirk said. His father, 44-year-old Hector Escobar Sr., was treated at LDS Hospital with a gunshot wound to the lower back and released.A man approached the father and son Monday afternoon and offered to sell them narcotics, Kirk said. They refused, and the son and man argued. The father, who was in the area to speak with an employer, broke up the fight and led his son away, Kirk said.

They later returned to the area near Pioneer Park about 1 p.m. The father and son were standing in front of the Rio Grande Hotel, 428 W. 300 South, when the man approached them, pulled a revolver and opened fire, Kirk said. He fled northbound in a green 1984 Buick, driven by a female.
