Salina's fire department members, who have worked on a voluntary basis for many years, are now seeking a small amount of monthly compensation.
The group met with the City Council and proposed $140 per month for each firefighter. Mayor Grant Stubbs told them their request would be considered when officials begin working on the new budget.Councilman Ron Crane voiced concern about compensation for a firefighter who may only attend one meeting or fight a single fire. A working point system now in effect could be considered in connection with payments, the council was told by the firemen's spokesman, Russell Willden.
Each firefighter gains 60 points for a meeting and 60 points for fighting each fire, it was explained. The total number of points that could be earned in a year is 1,500.
