For the third time in the current school year, a teacher has filed suit for an assault that allegedly occurred while the educator was on the job.

A North Sanpete District teacher filed a complaint in 6th District Court stating that she was assaulted without provocation. Kathy Hansen, who teaches in Moroni Middle Middle School, asks for $1,000 in damages for personal injuries from being struck. She asks that the court require Robin Norman to pay the damages.A Uintah District teacher also has filed suit in 8th Circuit Court, seeking $11,000 for injuries she suffered in an alleged attack. Maurleen Olsen, a mathematics and physical education teacher at West Middle School, Roosevelt, alleges that a parent, Leslie Brown, came to her classroom and threatened her after the teacher intervened in a confrontation among several students. One student who became belligerent was sent home.

Olsen attempted to take the parent into a hallway to avoid an argument in front of students, but as she passed through the door, Brown hit her in the face with her fist, the civil lawsuit says. The teacher suffered bruises, contusions, a deviated septum and neck and back spasms, the suit says.

Earlier this year, a Jordan District teacher sued a 15-year-old student who she said physically attacked her when she insisted he remove his hat in the school building, in accordance with school rules.

That case, filed by Susan Atkin in 5th Circuit Court, Murray, has been settled, said Michael McCoy, attorney for the Utah Education Association, which represents the majority of Utah teachers.
